The core difference
Trello belongs to Atlassian and is based on a simple principle: boards with lists, lists with cards. Each card has a description, checklists, due dates and attachments. Additional features come through Power-Ups. Anyone who sees a board understands it straight away.
monday.com works with boards structured like tables: groups, columns and items. The Kanban view is one of many, alongside Gantt, calendar, timeline and dashboards across several boards. Pricing in 2026
Trello is considerably cheaper. The free plan covers up to 10 people and 10 boards per workspace. Standard costs 5 USD and Premium 10 USD per user per month, or 6 and 12.50 USD with monthly billing. Enterprise costs 17.50 USD per user and requires at least 50 users. The timeline, calendar and dashboard views and unlimited automations are only available from Premium.
For the AI Work Platform, monday.com costs 9 USD on the Basic plan, 12 USD on Standard and 19 USD on Pro, per seat per month. Paid plans start at 3 seats, and for new customers since May 2026 a bundle of AI credits is included. Gantt, timeline and automations are included from Standard. The most comparable plans are Trello Premium and monday.com Standard, because both only offer multiple views and team automations from that level. Here, the price per person is close.

Views and overview
Trello is built for Kanban. Moving cards, ticking off checklists, setting due dates: it all works without any training. From Premium, table, timeline, calendar, dashboard and map views are added.
monday.com shows the same data in many views and combines several boards in dashboards. That's the biggest difference day to day: if you need an overview of several projects or teams at once, monday.com shows workload, status and dates across all boards. Boards are also available on mobile.
Automations and integrations
Trello has built-in automations with Butler for rules, buttons and scheduled commands. The number of runs is limited on the Free and Standard plans. Integrations come through Power-Ups, for example for Slack, Google Drive or Jira.
monday.com goes further with automations, for example with multi-step workflows across several boards and integrations that sync data in both directions. For connections to systems without a native integration, Make is often used with both tools.
AI features
Trello uses Atlassian Intelligence, for example to generate card descriptions or derive tasks from comments. monday.com is a better fit as soon as several teams or projects run at the same time, workload and dates need to be visible across them, or sales and service should run in the same system as projects. A typical trigger for switching is the moment a team maintains several Trello boards in parallel and nobody knows the overall status any more.
Switching from Trello to monday.com
Before you transfer any data, it's worth looking at the structure. Trello lists usually become groups or status values in monday.com, cards become items and checklists become subitems. Labels can be mapped as status or tag columns.
Trello exports boards as JSON, and as CSV on higher plans. Depending on the scope, you transfer the data via the import in monday.com, as a CSV or, for many boards, automatically via Make.
